If you’re aiming to not just pass, but excel with your annual training & assessment, you’re in the right place. The process is crucial for anyone involved in vehicle testing. It ensures you stay sharp, compliant, and ready to deliver top-quality service. We'll walk you through everything you need to know, from the basics to practical tips that make the whole experience smoother.
Why MOT Annual Training & Assessment Matters
Every year, MOT testers must renew their certification to keep their skills and knowledge up to date. This isn’t just a bureaucratic hoop to jump through. It’s a vital step to maintain high standards in vehicle safety and emissions testing. Without this certification, you can’t legally carry out MOT tests.
The MOT annual certification confirms you understand the latest regulations and testing procedures. It also shows your commitment to professionalism. For automotive businesses, having certified testers boosts customer confidence and helps avoid costly penalties.
Think of it as a yearly health check for your testing skills. It keeps you in tune with changes in vehicle technology and legislation. Plus, it’s a chance to refresh your knowledge and sharpen your practical skills.

What the MOT Annual Training Involves
Our onsite training course includes your required 3 hours of training using a combination of theory and practical methods, followed by an online assessment. You’ll be tested on your knowledge of MOT regulations, vehicle safety standards, and the correct use of testing equipment. Each year DVSA publishes a list topics that the training & assessment is based upon.
The topics you need to study depend on whether you test class 1 and 2 vehicles (‘group A’) or class 3, 4, 5 and 7 vehicles (‘group B’).
Some topics are studied by both groups.
Group A (class 1 and 2 vehicles)
If you test vehicles in group A, you need to know about:
electric, hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles, disabled rider controls and vehicle modifications
information in the MOT testing guide
MOT test procedures
the MOT inspection manual for motorcycles and sidecars
Group B (class 3, 4, 5 and 7 vehicles)
If you test vehicles in group B, you need to know about:
electric, hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles, disabled driver controls and vehicle modifications
information in the MOT testing guide
MOT test procedures
the MOT inspection manual for cars and passenger vehicles
If you test vehicles in both group A and group B, you need to study all the topics. You also need to train for at least 6 hours a year (instead of 3) and take 2 annual assessments.
Preparation is key. Reviewing the latest MOT manuals and guidelines will give you a solid foundation. Many testers find it helpful to attend our onsite training sessions and even attend our refresher courses to boost their confidence.
